Emergency Medical Technician

EMS Education is available throughout Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties with multiple training locations.

The EMT training course includes a mixture of practical and lecture-based instruction. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in practical skills as well as on written examinations. Functional Position Description- Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)

All students enrolled in an EMT-Original class are required to obtain ten (10) clinical patient contacts. This time may be accomplished at affiliate ride sites and/or hospitals.

Students who successfully complete all course requirements will take the NYS EMT-Basic Certification exam.

Required Pre-requisites: Students must provide verification of a physical and vaccinations. Per NYS BEMSaTS Policy 24-03: All students enrolled in NYS BEMS EMS original and refresher programs must achieve minimum competencies in their courses by meeting the following objectives:
  • Meets standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.120 (q) (6) (i) (a-f) “First Responder Awareness Level”
  • Meets the standards set by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Association in the current National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards.
  • Completion of IS-100.a
  • Completion of IS-700.a
  • Completion of IS-200.a (Recommended for BLS & Required for Paramedic students) These objectives may be met by one of the approved courses listed in this policy, by a course that meets or exceeds the objectives and is submitted for approval by the Bureau, or by a qualified subject matter expert who meets the requirements listed below.
